Flat shoes are in Fashion… Hooray
08.05.08My wife tells me these things to me, as I am clearly not “in” with the latest fashion news… In fact by the time I finish writing this post high heel shoes will be back in again.
But I was happy to hear that flat shoes for females are all the rage, possibly down to the stunning Carla Bruni wearing flats so beautifully so she doesn’t tower over French President Sarkozy. But there does seem to be a fair amount of disagreement of the health benefits of flat shoes…
I have literally just had an argument with the front desk girl at “The Gym”, she claims her doctor says that you need about 2cm of heel on your shoes for good healthy muscles in the calf and ankle. Various “experts” on the internet claim you need a shoe with good support for the arch, and switching from heels to flats can cause excessive achilles strain.
Without adding to add more confusion to the debate, a healthy dose of common sense is needed I think.
You see the body has been designed in a specific way, if we were meant to walk around on our tip toes all day, then our feet would have been shaped that way, ie. with a heel that is 10cm bigger than it is currently.
Unfortunately trying to argue the point with many of my clients is like pulling teeth, regardless of the evidence i can provide to show the massive negative impact heels have on your posture, causing all manner of problems such as knee, hip and back pain.
Claims that flats will put strain on the achilles is actually very true if you are coming straight from wearing 4 inch “spikes”, your calf muscles will be shortened to such a degree that the extra pull on the tendon that attaches to the bottom of your foot will cause pain.
So what are the benefits of wearing “Carla’s” flats
- The biggest benefit is improvements in posture
- Lesser risk of knee and back pain
- Greater flexibility in the ankle joint
I also have a theory that says that wearing heels causes you to have a stomach bulge! Given the position your ankles and knees are forced into when wearing heels, the pelvis needs to compensate by tilting forward, pushing your abdominals and stomach forward giving the appearance of a bulging stomach!!!
Now at the risk of writing the most unpopular BLOG post in history, I am going to sign off now and leave it up to you to see some common sense when it comes to wearing heels!
Tim
and this is just after 1 Session!!!!
1. After the first schock of having to get up at 6.15 to go to the forest…( I did curse both myself and Tim for this insane idea when the alarm went off:)) I kind of forgot about that when arriving to Bambush at 7 in the morning…the Peacefulness, the birds singing and the Fresh air just hit me and I was so Happy to just being there!
2. Sprinting up some hills to the sound of Bird Song is, believe it or not, a lot more MOTIVATING than sprinting on the treadmill to an old bad Scooter Song…
3. We were all Sweating bucket loads BUT You can’t acctually smell it…instead you just smell the Freshness of the Forest and if that is not an Excuse to join Forest Fit I don’t know what is…

The alternative Goal Setting
02.05.08We sound like broken records sometimes. All these trainers, coaches and fitness professionals spouting the benefits of effective goal setting. We have read so much about goals, our reaction is often “Yeah heard that one before” and we pretty much ignore the sound advice BECAUSE we have heard it so often.
One such example of this is making a goal measureable, you know “I want to lose 10kg my the end of June!”, you are currently at weight X and you want to be weight Y by the end of next month. You can jump on the scales each Monday to see how you are getting on.
Sound advice! But hey haven’t we heard this sooooo many times before, it is now a case of this goal setting thing is kinda boring so lets not bother.
And what happens if/when you reach the target weight, what happens then? We could dance a merry jig, pat yourself on the back and say well done :o) In my experience I have seen people reach a target weight and still not be happy with their body shape. It is no wonder goal setting gets a bad reputation!
One of the key aspects of our Goal Achievement Strategy is to do with getting excited by your goal, getting excited in the sense of being a kid all over again, that it keeps us awake at night with excitement. Here is a goal I have just thought of which I am sure most people would get excited/interested in.
“I want at least 5 people to tell me, completely unprovoked, how great I am looking, by the end of June. Not only will this make all my efforts feel worthwhile, but it will make the process of getting a body worth commenting on much more enjoyable.”
Everyone loves a bit of this kinda compliment, it is certainly a lot more rewarding than the numbers on the scales…
